Clinics Can Help Receives Additional $10K for KINDER Project to Help Children with Special Needs Get Medical Equipment
South Florida – The good news continues for Clinics Can Help (CCH) with another $10K grant to support the organization’s Kinder Project, for the medical equipment needs for children with disabilities. The money comes from a grant from Admirals Cove Foundation and will be used to purchase children’s wheelchairs for those in need across Palm Beach, Dade, Broward, Saint Lucie and Martin counties. Since 2017, the Foundation has donated $30K to CCH programs such as this one. Founded in 2005, CCH is Florida’s only nonprofit organization that collects, cleans, refurbishes and then donates gently used medical equipment and supplies for children and adults in need.
Jaime Walton, director of development for CCH, says that the organization will use these latest funds to purchase standard children’s wheelchairs to be given out to patients with orthopedic limitation or special needs. The organization also has a number of local children come to CCH on a regular basis because of post-surgical rehab, fractures and sports injuries.
Since the onset of COVID-19, the need for equipment is even greater as more people lose their jobs and subsequently insurance and income that come along with it. Clinics Can Help’s CEO and founder, Owen O’Neill says the children’s wheelchairs for the Kinder Project will be equipped with elevating leg rests, an important feature since many injuries and/or fractures require the affected leg to be elevated for proper healing.
“Additionally, lightweight wheelchairs are easier to propel and transport than models made for adults. These standard children’s wheelchairs come with “flip-back arms,” which allow kids to transfer in and out with less effort and slide under a table with less difficulty so they can be an active part of a social group once schools can safely resume in-person classes,” explains O’Neill who notes that research has shown that patients with access to appropriate medical equipment heal faster, are protected against further injury, and have the independence required for a high quality of life. “We are grateful for the continued support of partners like Admirals Cove Foundation, the ways they are helping the children in need across our community, entrusting us to continually provide for our community.”
