Tips for Aging in Healthy Ways

Did you know that the Fall is traditionally the time that the U.S. focuses its attention on the health and well-being of our older adults? Healthy Aging Month, which just wrapped up in September, began as an annual celebration a little over 20 years ago. We are using this time to get you thinking about how the proper medical equipment can help you feel better, stay well, and become even healthier.

Restore Joint Mobility
If you’re recovering from a recent surgery such as a total hip replacement, consider getting an elevated toilet seat or a bedside commode to ensure you always keep your new hip in the perfect alignment. Likewise, an adjustable shower chair will keep you safely seated at the proper angle as you bathe, while a hand-held shower sprayer will make it easier to keep your wound dry while you soap and rinse.

Stay Physically Independent
Crutches, canes, and walkers appropriately adjusted to your height will help you stay on the go. Depending on your level of endurance and needs, you might consider a roller walker with hand brakes. Lighter weight models are available that collapse easily and fold flat to fit in the trunk or backseat of your car. Add a handy basket to the front, and you’re all set for a quick trip to the grocery or bank!

Increase Lifelong Safety
Rubber mats in showers and tubs reduce the risk of slips and falls in the bathroom for all members of your family, no matter their age and stage. Grab rails installed in the bathroom and handrails placed near entry steps and in stairwells give added insurance that you can catch your balance easily if you feel wobbly. Non-skid mats sized to stay out of sight under area rugs reduce the chance of tripping.
